Introducing football fans in Africa to Jesus

Planet Sport Football Africa is a weekly, 30-minute programme for football fans in and from Africa. The show features news about African football and African players around the world. It is broadcast on over 50 stations in 14 African countries including Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone and the Gambia. 

The show introduces football fans to Jesus through testimonies from players, such as Nigerian striker, Odion Ighalo (left) “Without God I wouldn’t be where I am today,” he said. “In everything I do, I give glory back to God. I’ll never share the glory.”

It costs just £23 to produce Planet Sport Football Africa for each radio station that broadcasts the programme every week. The range of stations that broadcast our programming allow us to speak to those in countries and situations where hearing the gospel is difficult or even impossible.

Football is hugely popular across Africa, providing us with a great platform from which to engage with football fans and, through the constant guidance of the Holy Spirit, introduce them to Jesus Christ and the good news of the bible. The programmes feature testimonies of Christian footballers and discuss issues unique to Africa such as juju and superstition in football.

I’m involved in the show as it gives an opportunity to introduce football fans to Jesus through the sport. Football is huge across most of Africa so it gives an opportunity to engage listeners, to give them a show with content that they love to hear and also to bring in issues of faith that take us beyond just sport. I have been based in South Africa now and I’ve been involved for Passion for Sport as a reporter, an analyst covering the Olympic Games, the soccer World Cups and other great championships across the world. For me it is important to be involved with Passion for Sport because it is really a great way to introduce football fans to Jesus and I feel football is just a great way to be able to do that - to be able to talk about the character of Jesus, to be able to talk about the attributes of Jesus, to talk about Christian values, to talk about Christian principles and I feel it’s just important especially here across the continent of Africa."
